How infection works

A Bite Isn't Instant Death: How Our Progressive Infection System Gives You Time — and Takes It Away

In a world where every mistake can cost you your life, being bitten by an infected is not necessarily a death sentence. But that doesn't mean you can afford to treat it like a minor scratch.

We want infection to be more than just another status effect that appears on your screen after an encounter with an enemy. It's a separate survival story that begins the moment you're bitten and gradually changes the way you play. You'll have time to react, assess the situation, and try to find a way out. But with every missed opportunity, things will become more difficult.

It Starts with Small Things

Infection progresses gradually, passing through several stages. The first symptoms are easy to underestimate or even mistake for ordinary fatigue.

You might notice that your stamina takes longer to recover than usual. Your aim starts to drift slightly, making it harder to shoot accurately. At first glance, nothing seems particularly serious, but these small changes are the first signs that something is wrong.

We deliberately don't want infection to become an obvious threat right away. In the early stages, you can still function more or less normally, but your body is already beginning to fail you.

Time Is Working Against You

As the infection progresses, its effects become harder to ignore.

The edges of your screen gradually darken, reducing your field of view. Your rising body temperature increases your need for water, meaning your usual supplies start running out faster. What once seemed like a minor inconvenience gradually becomes a serious problem.

At this point, you'll have to reconsider your plans. Should you keep moving or look for a safe place? Should you risk searching for supplies or spend time treating the infection? And most importantly, how much longer can your body withstand its effects?

Treatment Is About More Than Finding Pills

Infection doesn't have to end in death. You can influence how quickly it progresses.

Antibiotics and proper rest help slow down the process, giving you more time to find a more effective treatment. In rare cases, special medications found in the quarantine zone can reverse the infection entirely.

But finding them won't be easy. The quarantine zone is hardly a safe place, which means that trying to save your life might require taking even greater risks.

The key is to manage your resources wisely and avoid putting off treatment until the last possible moment. Slowing down the infection is not the same as getting rid of it.

Every Bite Begins a New Story

Our goal is to make infection a полноцен part of the survival experience, rather than a mechanic with only one possible outcome.

A bite should create a situation where players have to make decisions, change their plans, and look for ways to stay alive. Sometimes, rest and antibiotics will help you buy more time. Sometimes, you'll manage to find a rare medication and reverse the infection entirely. And sometimes, the consequences of your own negligence will become irreversible.

There is, however, one absolute rule: if left untreated, the infection will eventually kill your character.

A bite doesn't end your story. It starts a countdown. And how much time you have left depends entirely on the decisions you make.
